Woman concocts robbery story to cover affair
Latest Updated by 2006-12-15 11:27:03

A WOMAN gave away her 3-month-old son to her lover and then reported him stolen in a bid to cover up her extramarital affair, Chinese-language newspapers reported Thursday (Dec 14).

The woman, identified only as Yuan, went to a police station in Shahe at about 12 p.m. last Friday and claimed that her son had been kidnapped. Yuan said she was waiting at a zebra crossing with the infant in her arms when a man dressed in black got out of a black sedan that had stopped in front of her and took the baby away, the Shenzhen Special Zone Daily said.

She told police that she jumped into a taxi and chased the black sedan to the Honey Lake bus stop on Shennan Thoroughfare where she lost track of the vehicle. Yuan claimed that she didn't see the vehicle's liscense plate number due to her near-sightedness.

The baby-robbery case attracted the public security bureau's attention, which set up a special force to investigate the case.

However, a preliminary investigation cast doubt over the credibility of Yuan's report.

Police questioned security guards and street cleaners in the neighborhood where Yuan lives and where the robbery took place, but none is said to have witnessed the case. In addition, a search for the taxi which Yuan claimed to have used to chase the robber also failed, the newspaper said.

The police task force shifted the focus of their investigation to Yuan and her associates.

Police soon found out that Yuan has an intimate relationship with a 40-year-old man surnamed Sun. Sun lives in Longgang District and has a sister who lives in Honghao Garden near the Honey Lake.

On Tuesday morning, the special task force spotted the baby in a middle-aged woman's arms with a man in a central circuit television tape recorded at 11.21 a.m. last Friday in Honghao Garden. The finding gave police a clue, who Tuesday afternoon found the infant in Sun's apartment in Longgang District.

Yuan was arrested soon afterwards. She confessed that she started dating Sun in 1993 but they broke up a year later. Yuan later married her present husband surnamed Lei and has a son. Yuan left her husband in September 2004 after a fight and found Sun, the Southern Metropolis Daily said.

Yuan moved into Sun's apartment and lied to her husband that she was staying with her sister. Yuan gave birth to a baby in August this year and went back to her husband with the baby.

Two months later, Yuan noticed that the more the baby grew, the more it resembled Sun. Afraid of being found out by her husband, she contacted Sun and gave him the baby.

Yuan was fined 500 yuan (US$6.25) and detained for 10 days. She is on bail because she is breast-feeding the baby. Sun was also detained for 10 days and given a 500-yuan fine for his role as an accomplice. The baby is now in Lei's custody until a DNA test result is out.
