German Nobel laureate Guenther Grass admitted that he served in the Waffen SS, the combat arm of Adolf Hitler's paramilitary forces in the second world war, a German newspaper The Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung reported Friday (Aug 11).

Grass, regarded as the greatest literary icon in post war Germany, said that he was recruited into the SSor the Schutzstaffel at the age of 17 and served the Waffen SS Frundsberg Panzer Division in Dresden.

Earlier it was widely known he had served as a soldier, and captured by US forces.

Asked why he was making the disclosure after so many years, Grass said, "It weighed on me. My silence over all these years is one of the reasons I wrote this book [Peeling Onions]. It had to come out, finally."

The 78-year-old Grass, won international acclaim in 1959 with his first novel, The Tin Drum, depicting the generation raised in the Nazi era. He won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1999 for his works including The Tin Drum which was made into an Oscar-winning film in 1979.

Grass' memoir of his youth during WWII is slated for publication in September.
