[expat] South Koreans hunt for jobs in Shenzhen
Latest Updated by 2006-06-23 10:18:16

ABOUT 450 South Korean nationals are employed by companies in Shenzhen, and 300 to 500 more will join the city's workforce annually in the following years, South Korea's chamber of commerce in Shenzhen said Thursday (June 22).

"We will introduce more and more South Korean talents to Shenzhen," Kang Hee-bang, chairman of the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Shenzhen, told the Shenzhen Daily yesterday during a presentation promoting human resources export programs of South Korea.

There are two human resources export programs in South Korea, one run by the Human Resources Development Service of Korea and the other by the Small Business Corporation. Both offer generous subsidies to people working overseas, including tuition fees for language training, air tickets and allowances, Kang said.

In the past, Korean professionals in such programs usually went to South Korean companies, but Kang hopes that more South Koreans will be hired by Chinese companies.

Under the two programs, a company only needs to pay about 2,000 yuan (US$250) a month to hire an intern from South Korea, and 12,000 yuan a month to hire a professional, said Park.

Shenzhen companies that want to hire South Korean professionals can apply with the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Shenzhen, said Kang.

Facing intense competition for jobs in their home country, South Korean youths are becoming increasingly interested in overseas jobs, and many are eager to join the two programs, said Sungman Lee, general manager of Woori Bank Shenzhen Branch, which opened last year. The branch has three South Korean employees, all holding management positions, he said.
