[Expat] 'ICIF provided right welcome'

Special Report: 2nd ICIF in Shenzhen

AS an Australian citizen who decided to live and work in Shenzhen just three weeks ago, I was delighted that I came at an opportune time. The ICIF, which ended Sunday, provided just the right welcome to Shenzhen for me, a classical music lover, by presenting a concert by the Perth Symphony Orchestra last Saturday.

I enjoyed tremendously the mixture of famous Chinese and European classical pieces, performed so beautifully by the nearly 90 musicians from Perth, including the spectacular piano soloist Jean-Yves Thibaudet, and the exquisite Matthias Bamert, a conductor who has been described in the international press as urbane, elegant, stylish, dynamic, sensitive, enthusiastic and sensational. Bamert has one of the busiest international touring schedules of any conductor.

Judging from the enthusiastic applause, even if the audience would not have been fully aware of the fame of the conductor and the professionalism of the Perth Symphony Orchestra, the concert was a success and people will remember it for a long time.

The fact that the weather forecast was not favorable did not deter music buffs from attending the event. The curious, who would normally fill the seats left by the connoisseurs of classical music, stayed behind on account of the strong winds.

I am delighted that Shenzhen provides opportunities for people to follow the arts and classical music.
