I'M an adoption social worker from California, the United States. I came to Shenzhen to visit family, friends, and child welfare orphanages and organizations.
Upon arriving here a week ago, I was immediately awestruck by the development and commitment of the government to further the welfare and well-being of all its citizens. I see this evidenced in the multitude of resources devoted to this vibrant growing city, which at the same time honors the environment with its many abounding parks and natural spaces created for Shenzhen's citizens and visitors to enjoy.
With more than 10 years of expertise in child welfare relating to international and domestic adoption, a master's degree in social work, and a clinical license (LCSW) from the state of California, I presently work with several private adoption agencies, and I am the head program manager of a rapidly growing non-profit adoption program, Penny Lane Adoption and Foster Care Agency, in Los Angeles. I also work privately in all areas serving the adoption constellation. I am truly interested in promoting positive relations between Chinese people and Americans who adopt Chinese children.
It is the purpose of my initial visit to China over the next two weeks to learn first hand, and then accurately promote an understanding of China's heritage, culture, and customs so that Chinese children raised in the United States may have a vibrant connection to their original birthplace.
I am hoping to understand the complexities and intricacies of the Chinese child welfare system in order to be able to better assist American adopters in caring for Chinese-born children from the first moment they meet them. I am hoping to impact administrative procedures to promote even greater harmony between our two great nations.
I have visited the Shenzhen Social Welfare Center and am looking forward to visiting Guangzhou Adoption Service Agency, as well as forging connections with other institutions and people in the region that assist in caring for children and are devoted to promoting family stability and permanency for children. I would welcome any inquiries or suggestions that are in alignment with my stated intentions.
