THE Mid-Autumn Festival, an occasion for family reunions, was extra special this year for Yeung Hung-kit.
The four-year-old Hong Kong boy was reunited with his family after he went missing in Shenzhen nearly two weeks ago.
Yeung became separated from his parents in Futian District on Sept. 8 and was taken care of by a Shenzhen policeman and his wife after being found wandering the streets.
The tearful reunion came after his plight was reported in the Shenzhen Legal News and a relative in Shenzhen called the family. The paper said the boy had run away from his mother, Chan Yin-mui, to buy ice cream and disappeared into the crowd. His panicked mother searched the district but could not find her son.
"I couldn't sleep for several nights and always woke up from a nightmare," she told the newspaper.
Local residents took the boy to a police station after finding him in the streets.
After a search of the neighborhood failed to find the missing child's family, officer Li Xiaoqing decided to take the boy home. He and his wife spent the next few days posting messages on the Internet, asking for help to find the boy's parents. More than 300 people volunteered to help.
When the Shenzhen Legal News published the report on the child Sunday, a relative of the family living in Shenzhen called the boy's father, Yeung Wing-seng.
The father was so excited that he rushed to Shenzhen without the boy's identification documents, the newspaper reported. He was turned back and had to return later in the day.
Yeung Hung-kit was finally reunited with his family Sunday night -- 10 days after he went missing. Apart from some minor flu symptoms, he was in good health.
