[Guangzhou] Old people to get home care service
Latest Updated by 2005-09-15 10:00:38

LIWAN District would provide nurses to look after old people living in the district starting from 2006, the Guangzhou Daily reported Wednesday (Sep 14th).

Each of the district's 22 subdistricts will employ 30 nurse practitioners to do housework for and take care of elderly people who are infirm. Old people without children, or with low income will get one hour of free service each day.

According to the report, Liwan District has more than 107,000 people aged 60 and above, accounting for 20.5 percent of the total population in the district. When the new Liwan District is established October to include the present Liwan and Fangcun districts, the number will exceed 130,000.

The home nursing service has been provided on a trial basis in Fengyuan and Jinhua subdistricts in July.

The district civil affairs authorities trained more than 20 laid-off workers before sending them to the homes of 40 old people living in the two subdistricts to take care of them one hour each day free of charge.

The homecare service was welcomed by the old people, the report said.

The service expenses were covered by the municipal and district governments. The service has helped not only the old people, but also the laid-off workers who received a monthly salary of 700-800 yuan each for the work from the government.

The service will be extended gradually to all the elderly people, but the affluent old people would be required to pay for the service.
