Language barrier causes misunderstanding
Latest Updated by 2005-02-17 10:12:47

Wijan Sangkla comes from Thailand. He is a cook and now working at a restaurant in Shenzhen.

He has been living in China for over a year, but has been in Shenzhen for only two months. Before that, he worked at a restaurant in Shanghai.

As he can speak and understand only very little Chinese and English, he came across many funny stories.

Once when he was watching TV in his dorm in Shenzhen, police visited his place for a routine population check.

When he was asked to show his passport, he could not understand what they were saying. And that's how the misunderstanding occurred. He was taken away by the police. Later, his colleagues went to take him home after explaining his situation. This unusual experience is regarded as his funniest.

Compared with Shanghai, he thinks Shenzhen is more convenient and the weather is more comfortable. There is a big supermarket in his neighborhood and it is only a few minutes' walk from his dorm to the Metro station.

He says it is hard for him to find a suitable place to go on holidays in Shenzhen as there are no tourist guidebooks with details of Shenzhen's travel resources.

He is leaving for Thailand in March to participate in the biggest Thai festival in April. He will then return to Shenzhen.
