GD on cold weather alert
Latest Updated by 2004-12-30 15:04:25

The Provincial Government has called for governments at all levels to implement protection measures to overcome difficulties during the cold weather, the Guangzhou-based Information Times reported Wednesday (Dec. 29th).

The temperature dropped to 6.7 degree Celsius in Guangzhou on Wednesday, the lowest so far this winter. Temperatures would remain low in the next few days. It has been forecast to fall to -2 degree Celsius at midnight Dec. 31, the report said.

Governments at all levels were asked to help people who were in difficulties because of the cold weather and to also arrange protection for farm produce.

Drivers in the northern part of the province were also warned to be careful driving on icy roads.

The newspaper reminded people, particularly those in poor health, to keep warm if the have to go outside.

The lower temperature pushed up sales of winter clothing in Guangzhou and many hot-pot restaurants were bustling with people lining up to wait for tables. The low temperature also caused a hike in the price of vegetables. Taxis were also busier with the cold weather, the report said.
