  1. 39.4 m people are living with HIV worldwide (increase from 36 m in 2003)
  2. The fastest growing HIV epidemic is in East Asia, particularly China, Indonesia and Vietnam
  3. Eastern Europe and Central Asia, particularly Russia and the Ukraine and are also experiencing steep rises, fuelled by a rise in injecting drug users.
  4. The number of HIV positive women in East Asia has risen by 56% since 2002
  5. Over 80% of people living with HIV in Europe are under 30
  6. Sub-Saharan Africa continues to be the worst hit region, with HIV rates as high as 25-30%
