German ballet to visit Guangdong
Latest Updated by 2004-09-03 11:57:28

The Chemnitz Opera House Ballet Company from Germany will present the original production "Bremen Town Musicians" at the Century Theatre on August 27 and 28.

On its first China tour, the company will also perform the modern ballet "Max and Moritz" in Shenzhen and Zhuhai, both in South China's Guangdong Province.

Premiered in May 2003 in Bremen, the ballet is adapted from a German fairy tale.

Four animals, a donkey, a dog, a cat and a cock are getting old and can no longer work for their owners. They decide to leave for the northern city of Bremen, which is recruiting musicians.

Along the way, they stop off at an old house habituated by several thieves. In a dark room, the four animals rehearse a self-styled performance called the "Forest Concert." Their sudden and strange singing and dancing frighten the thieves out of the big house.

The next day, the four go to the city for an audition. The donkey plays the trumpet, the cock plays the bagpipes, the dog plays the flute, and the cat plays the clarinet.

So what happens next? Do they pass the audition and how is their life in Bremen? You will have to go and find out for yourself. This modern ballet production features fresh choreography by Torsten Handler.

Handler is one of the most distinguished dancers in Germany. He was once the lead dancer of the Berlin Ballet Company.

In 2001, Handler was appointed Choreographic Director of the Chemnitz Opera House Ballet Company.

Handler has choreographed several other productions for the company.
