Fenghuang Zhen, dubbed Phoenix town, Chaozhou municipality, ranks first in Guangdong for possessing the richest resources of aged tea plant.
Starting to produce tea since early Song Dynasty, the town now boasts 2400 tea plants of more than 100 years old, among which some are even above 400 years of age.
Fenghuang Mount, where Fenghuang Zhen located, is believed to be the cradle of Wulong Tea, a major tea species of China.
Sources reveal that the local people's blind pursuing for quality have resulted in the severe damage to the rare aged tea plants. Local government has thus put the plants under protection, trying to prevent them from excessive picking.
Asexuality-breeding technique is now being used to preserve the gene of the existing old tea plants.
