Elephant Fossil showed in Guangzhou

Elephant lived 20 million years ago, ancestors of giraffes and tigers, what do they look like? The answer could be found in the  'Explore the secret world - Ancient Animal Fossil Exhibition', which is to open in Guangzhou on Apr. 28th.

Most precious: Shanxi Beast
Among the six skeleton fossils of ancient animal to be displayed, the most precious one is that of Shanxi Beast.

Shanxi beast is the ancestor of giraffe, existing some 23 million years ago. The fossil on show is 2.7 meters in length, 3 meters in height and 0.6 meters in width. At present there are only 4 fossils of this spices in the world, with the one on show the most complete.

Two Platybelodons: Mother and Child
The two platybelodons are mother and child, lived in Tongguer, Inter Mongolia, North China some 22 million years ago. They died in the same time and same places so that their skeletons are found near to each other. It is believed that they lost lives in a natural disaster. Different from modern elephant, the platybelodons have shovel-shape incisor teeth, which are even longer than their tusks. The animal shovel foods with incisor teeth and put the foods into month by its long nose.

Ancestor of modern tiger: Saber-toothed Tiger
The displayed saber-toothed tiger is 2.06 meters in length, 1.76 meters in height. Source reveals the fossil, found in Dongxiang County, Gansu Province, west China, is the first complete fossil of its spices found in the country.

The exhibition to last four months
The exhibition is to explain the evolution of spices and the change of eco-environment. Besides the six skeleton fossils, over 800 precious ancient specimens are also on show, making it the largest-scale of its kind ever held in Guangzhou. Source reveals the exhibition is to last four months.
