Photographer tells of snapping famed figures
Latest Updated by 2004-03-16 10:07:28

DENG WEI, a famous Chinese photographer who takes portraits of the eminent world figures, was at a Pokart chainstore in Futian District on Saturday afternoon to promote his newly published series of books.

Written in diary form, the books, Eight Years, were published in three volumes. They described how Deng --- a respected Chinese professor --- eked out a living ironing clothes in an English clothes factory while he tried to realize his dream of photographing international personalities.

Media and fans gathered to have Deng sign books and to listen to his stories, including one about an English boss who bullied and exploited him in the clothes factory.

"I'm grateful to everyone who tortured me and pressured me, because without them I couldn't have achieved my goal," he said.

From 1990 to 1997, Deng interviewed and took portraits of more than 100 international figures, including famous statesmen, politicians, scientists, artists, writers and historians.

With his camera, he recorded vivid and touching moments with celebrities including former U.S. presidents Ronald Reagan and George Bush, Henry Kissinger and, American-Chinese physicist Yang Zhenning, Singaporean Senior Minister Lee Kuan Yew, former Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin and Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf.

Deng singled out Musharraf as a particularly "hospitable" figure who allowed Deng to use his toilet and Deng's assistant to sleep in his bed.

Deng, born in Beijing, graduated from Beijing Film Academy in 1978, where he also taught after graduation.

From 1980 to 1985, Deng traveled around the country and photographed prominent Chinese cultural figures. The idea expanded to taking portraits of international personalities.
