On May 18, the Guangdong Airport Group and Guangzhou Jingdou Holdings Ltd. signed a 15-year lease for the old Baiyun Airport terminal, which is to be reconstructed into a large shopping mall integrating shopping, dining, leisure and entertainment activities. Following the Teemall and the Beijing Road commercial areas, another distinctive world-class shopping mall will appear in Guangzhou. It will promote the development of business throughout Baiyun District. Hundreds of millions will be invested in the reconstruction and decoration of the old airport terminal; the new mall will open to the public in a year.

The old terminal is located at the core region of Baiyun New Town. With a favorable geographical position and good transport networks, the 106,000-square-meter terminal is one of the major facilities of Baiyun District. According to "The Baiyun New Town Core Area Detailed Plan" issued by the Guangzhou Urban Planning Bureau at the beginning of this year, the old Baiyun Airport District and the surrounding area, which accommodates the Baiyun International Conference Center, hotels, and supporting cultural and commercial facilities, will be built into an "eco living room of the city" and Guangzhou's secondary center. The north part of Baiyun New Town will become a provincial- and city-level functional area integrating conference services, culture, commerce and trade activities; the south part will be built into the city's secondary center integrating retail business, cultural, sports, business and commercial activities.
