IN memory of the 40th anniversary of the death of his father Fu Lei, Chinese pianist Fu Cong gave solo concerts Friday (Nov 24) and Saturday nights at Shenzhen Grand Theater, the third time he has held concerts in the city.

Fu's repertoire featured Debussy's "Berceuse Heroique," Haydn's "Piano Sonata in C Minor," Chopin's "Mazurkas," and "Barcarolle in F-sharp Op.60," and Schubert's "Sonata in B-flat D. 960."

His emotional performance impressed the audience. They received a gift,"Family Letters of Fu Lei" and were able to read his father's moving letters to him during his life abroad, as they listened to the music.

Guan Wanwei, local cultural critic, said the master has displayed his profound understanding of the classic music in the 18th and 19th centuries.

"Fu has shown his passion for music through his brilliant and sentimental play in some opuses," Guan said. But he also pointed out that as a pianist in his 70s, Fu could not handle all the classic pieces as easily as in his prime years.

Called the greatest Chinese musician alive today by the Time magazine, Fu has been blessed with the gift of music but struck by the unfairness of fate.

As a young man of 21, Fu won the third prize in Warsaw's 1955 International Chopin Piano Competition and the best performance award for playing Chopin's" Mazurkas."

After the competition, Fu stayed in Poland to continue his piano study. In December 1958, Fu left Poland for England when his parents were persecuted as"right-wingers"in China.

Fu Cong's father Fu Lei (1908-1966) was a famous scholar, art theorist and translator of French literature. He and his wife committed suicide in 1966 in defiance at their political persecution.

Between the 1960s and 1980s, Fu held about 2,400 solo concerts and recorded around 50 records. He has also been a jury member at international piano competitions including Leeds, Queen Elizabeth, Geneva, Chopin, Dino Ciani.

Over the years Fu has insisted on playing the piano for over eight hours every day. His hands are also suffering from tenosynovitis, inflammation of a tendon sheath.

Fu returned to China and held his first solo concert at Central Conservatory of Music in 1976. Now he often comes back to his motherland to perform and teach master classes.
