Like many other classic music masters, Irish pianist Barry Douglas shot to fame in a major international music competition. In the Eighth International Tchaikovsky Piano Competition in July 1986, he outperformed all competitors and won the Gold Medal, becoming the second Western pianist to win the Gold Medal since 1958. He is best known for his rendering of works by Romantic composers such as Brahms, Rachmaninoff and Tchaikovsky.
Krzysztof Penderecki is one of the greatest contemporary composers, dubbed the second most influential composer after Stravinsky.
