Wang Gongyi, born in Tianjin, China in 1946, graduated from the master's program of the Department of Prints at the Zhejiang Academy of Fine Arts in Hangzhou, China in 1980.

During the 1990s, he pursued his artistic aspirations in Europe and North America and finally settled in the United States in 2000. During that decade, his artistic styles and creative techniques underwent a profound transformation, with his works shifting from appeals to society to contemplation in peace and quiet. He no longer limits himself to a single variety of drawing; instead, he has made artistic pursuit a daily routine for self cultivation, and focuses on some most fundamental life issues, such as "fate" and "Tao". He integrates the expressive forms of modern western and post-modernist arts, the philosophy of traditional calligraphy and painting, and his self reflections, into copper, copper and stone plate etchings and integrated prints, to create serious abstract works with inherent artistic merits, thus blazing a new trail in his overseas artistic quest.
