Louis Cha, a Hong Kong-based famous scholar and kung fu novelist, on Wednesday received an honorary doctoral degree from Cambridge University in Britain. When he learned he would be awarded such an honor, he said he would like to spend four years at the university and study the courses for an MA and PH.D.

When asked why he wanted to take up studies in Cambridge, Cha answered: "I study for knowledge, not for degrees. When I was the dean of the Arts Academy at Zhejiang University, some people said I was not academically qualified. I had nothing to say to such criticisms. The only thing I can do is to increase my knowledge."

Cha further said the criticism was not the only reason for him to want to take up Cambridge courses. "I do not study for other people. When others criticize me, I correct my drawbacks if I have any. If the criticisms are not relevant, I take them as a spur for my own improvement," he said. He added that he could set an example to prove the saying, It's never too old to learn.

Cambridge found it difficult to find a teacher for Cha. Cha said he had contacted a Cambridge professor who was an expert in Tang Dynasty (618-907) history, with the Chinese name Mai Dawei, but the professor was reluctant. "Professor Mai turned down the offer, saying he was not qualified to teach me. I respect him very much. I told him I wanted to learn from him," Cha said.

So far, Cambridge has not made the decision whether to accept Cha's application to study.

The Shenzhen-based Daily Sunshine newspaper reported that the earliest date that Cha could begin studying at Cambridge would be early October. Cha said that he would study such subjects as Tang-dynasty history, Ming-dynasty history, European history and Greek history.
