Zhuhai People's Hospital successfully transplanted four corneas originating from the United States into four Chinese patients' eyes on June 25th.
It was the first time that doctors from Guangdong and Taiwan have co-conducted an operation. It is also the first time that the medical community from Taiwan has donated corneas to Guangdong.
The organization found the corneas in east Michigan, each costing $1,000 US, and then donated the corneas to Zhuhai. The four corneas arrived at Zhuhai half a day earlier than scheduled from their 8,000 kilometer journey from the United States. Patients benefiting from the transplant operations were selected from 120 applicants, who couldn't afford the high-priced procedure.
