THE route for an express passenger railway linking Guangzhou and Zhuhai has been decided.
Coaches and ferries are now the only means of transport between Guangzhou and Zhuhai and the railway is expected to slash the two-hour travel time between the two cities.
The 140-kilometer railway is expected to start operation next year. Construction is expected to begin in July on the project, which will cost 19.5 billion yuan (US$2.4 billion).
The north section of the railway had been planned to run past Beijiao and Chencun in Shunde District, Foshan, but was later diverted eastward.
There will be 18 stops along the route. A nonstop trip by the railway is estimated to take 44 minutes and cost 55 yuan, and a travel with stops at all the stations will take 86 minutes and cost 40 yuan.
The railway will also have a branch linking Zhongshan and Jiangmen cities.
A freight railway has also been planned between Guangzhou and Zhuhai, a project also expected to be kicked off this year.
