Gaoyao City is located on the southern bank of the Xijiang River, just opposite to Zhaoqing City. Both are about 100 km away from Guangzhou.
It was established as a county as early as in the Han Dynasty. It was named after Gaoyao Gorge (now renamed Lingyang Gorge) on the Xijiang River, and became a city at county level in 1993, now with a population of 706 000.
Gaoyao is closely connected with Zhaoqing City geographically as well as culturally. Places of interest are Red Mansion and Gaoyao Xuegong Pavilion.
