SZ woman offers guide to studying in Hong Kong
Latest Updated by 2007-05-29 10:45:33

Amid the growing popularity of Hong Kong universities among mainland school students, a Shenzhen woman who is studying in the special administrative region has published a book about her experiences there.

Wang Yi, a 2004 graduate of the reputed Shenzhen High School, is currently a sophomore majoring in filmmaking at Hong Kong Baptist University.

Last summer, she spent one month writing the 120,000-character book "Are You Ready for Hong Kong University?" which first went on sale in early March.

"Hundreds of students and parents asked me questions about studying in Hong Kong during the past years," Wang said, adding she wanted to provide valuable tips to students contemplating enrolling in a Hong Kong university.

After the first print run was sold out, with some 4,000 copies sold in Guangdong alone, the publisher issued a reprint.

The book, with a preface written by the principal of Hong Kong Baptist University, is available in bookstores in major cities including Beijing, Shanghai and Chongqing.

However, Wang said she hasn't paid much attention to the book's sales, as she regards the book as a record of her academic life.

She said not all mainland students can cope with the intense campus life in Hong Kong, adding that one of her classmates from the mainland dropped out as he couldn't adapt to the new environment.

Hong Kong universities have attracted a growing number of mainland students in recent years as some believe education in an international city like Hong Kong offers better career prospects.

Last year, more than 1,000 Shenzhen students picked Hong Kong universities as their first choice, including one of the only two examinees who scored full marks in the National College Entrance Examinations.
