A total of 112 polluting factories were reported by voluntary informers during the past two weeks, the city's environmental protection bureau said yesterday.
"We received 112 complaints on environmental pollution since May 13, after we announced a maximum of 100,000-yuan (US$12,987) cash reward for whistleblowers who provide valuable clues," a spokesman for the bureau said.
By May 25, the bureau had investigated 48 factories and 21 of them were found to have been illegally discharging untreated industrial waste.
One informant received a 5,000-yuan cash reward from the municipal environmental protection bureau May 22, for reporting a polluting factory in Longgang District. The factory was shut down, and its management ordered to make apology to the public, after it was found discharging heavily polluted sewage.
Last year, the municipal government received 639 reports, and 513 factories were punished.
