Cancer-stricken worker recovering
Latest Updated by 2007-05-25 10:45:03

A migrant worker suffering from lymphoma was recovering in a Futian hospital after local residents donated 382,000 yuan (US$48,900) for her treatment.

Deng Wanru, 33, may be discharged from Beijing University Shenzhen Hospital in two months, the Daily Sunshine said Thursday. Many people visited her after she was transferred from the intensive care unit (ICU) to a common ward Wednesday. She stayed 56 days in the ICU, and received a marrow transplant.

"She will be discharged after two months of observation in a common ward, if everything goes smoothly as expected," said Wang Jun, a doctor at the hospital.

"She is much better now. But we still need to watch for complications brought by repulsion after the transplant," Wang said.

The city's Project Care office handed over 152,000 yuan to Deng's father Wednesday afternoon, which was donated by local residents. This took the total amount of donations to 382,000 yuan.

Deng came from Heyuan, Guangdong Province to work as a salesperson in Shenfang Department Store in 1993. In 2005, she was chosen as one of the "model migrant workers" in the city.

However, she lost her job soon after when the department store closed down. She opened a furniture store with her savings.

In late 2005, Deng was diagnosed with lymphoma.

"My family did everything they could for me. My sister sold her apartment, my two brothers contributed all their savings and one also gave his marrow to me. I am from a common family, and the high medical fees are beyond our means," she said in a plea for help sent to an official with the Shenzhen Labor and Social Security Bureau.

Many people came to her aid after Guan Lingen, head of the bureau, posted her story on the Internet on April 17 this year.
