Man, 61, applies for jobs online
Latest Updated by 2007-04-09 11:09:38

SURFING the Internet is certainly not the privilege of young people any more. Lin Jinyong, 61, has already been online for more than 10 years.

Lin, a retiree living in Bao'an District, recently uploaded a two-minute video of himself, in the hope of finding a job.

"I graduated from high school in 1967. I worked in the administrative departments of a factory and a police station in Fujian Province before retiring," Lin said to his webcam in Mandarin with a strong dialect.

Lin said he was looking for a job related to his past experience. He told a Daily Sunshine reporter that he wanted to help his son support his family.

Lin is the oldest jobseeker trying his luck in the online job-seeking competition launched by the site www.wingoon.com earlier this year.

Lin, who came from Fujian to Shenzhen in 1997 to live with his son, said he would like to try more new things online.

Every morning, he chats online with his Fujian friends. Every evening, he records a video of his granddaughter - who is still in kindergarten - when she practices writing. "The camera can quieten her down," he said.

Lin recently opened a blog for his granddaughter to record her life. He wants to keep it as a gift for the girl when she grows up.

On April 5, the traditional Tomb-Sweeping Festival, Lin opened an online memorial for his parents and grandparents, following the fashion started by youngsters.
