Continuous air-raid sirens resounded throughout the city after Vice Mayor Lu Ruifeng pushed the siren button in an underground headquarters at 11 a.m. Tuesday (Sept. 7).
Hundreds of sirens throughout the city were clearly displayed on large screens and any not working was identified for repair later.
The exercise, which lasted 15 minutes, included a three-minute preliminary siren, then another lasting three minutes, and finally a three-minute siren marking the end of the trial.
After the exercise, a number of residents phoned the Shenzhen Municipal Civil Defense Office to express their support for the test. Some said they lived out of earshot of the sirens and suggested more be installed nearby.
Sun Xiaoming, director of the Shenzhen Municipal Civil Defense Office, said the total number of sirens was expected to reach 750 in the next few years, giving the city full coverage.
To better inform residents of the exercise, the civil defense office sent mobile phone users a short message about the exercise three days ago, the first time this had been done.
Since 2000, the siren exercise has been conducted Sept. 7 each year.
