Two kidnap suspects were caught in Jiangmen City 26 hours after they allegedly kidnapped a 4-year-old, demanding 80,000 yuan (US$9,680) in ransom.
A man surnamed Diao called police Sept. 14 after receiving a note threatening to injure his son if he failed to put 80,000 yuan into a certain bank account before 5 p.m., a Guangzhou Daily report said.
Investigations revealed that a red taxi had stopped in front of Diao's apartment that morning and a boy was seen being taken away by two men.
Police also found out that, several days earlier, Diao's younger brother narrowly escaped a sleeping-pill kidnapping.
Liu, a suspect, was caught on the afternoon of Sept. 15 after a telephone call to the father was traced. The 4-year-old boy was rescued from a hotel near Xinhui Bus Station. The other suspect, who did not know the boy had been rescued, contacted the father again. He was caught by police waiting at the hotel a day later, lured by the 30,000 yuan Diao promised to give him as prepaid ransom on condition he heard his son's voice.
The two were confirmed to be the same persons who allegedly tried to kidnap Diao's brother.
