Latest Updated by 2005-09-29 11:22:43

The Guangzhou Metro Co. is building a big shopping mall at the transfer station for Metro Line 1 and Line 2 near the Fifth Zhongshan Road.

The three-level shopping mall will be the biggest underground shopping mall in Guangzhou when it opens to the public in 2006, the Guangzhou Daily reported. Its floor space will cover nearly 30,000 square meters and it will have parking space for over 200 cars.

The metro company is very optimistic about the future of the shopping mall, as the two Metro lines and the Fifth Zhongshan Road are expected to bring as many as 100,000 people to the shopping mall every day.

The shopping mall will have eight exits to the waiting halls of Metro Line 1 and Line 2.

The area above the shopping mall will be a park, which is expected to add further value to it. The government has said the Renmin Park will be extended to the Fifth Zhongshan Road and cover the ground above the shopping mall.

The shopping mall is expected to greatly boost the commercial environment of the Fifth Zhongshan Road, and in time benefit the traditional commercial center of Beijing Road.

Construction of the shopping mall started in October 2003. It is the first shopping mall that the Guangzhou Metro Co. has invested in.
