The Tianhe District is along the left (northern) side of the Pearl River. Tremendous changes in its physical landforms and skylines have taken place since 1980s.
Tianhe District was established in 1985 and has become one of the eight urban districts since then. It lies in the rapid-developing eastern part of Guangzhou Municipality, covering an area of 108.3 sq km and with a population of about 1.1093 million. Under its administration, there are 14 executive streets in two towns forming a brand-new urban center with mushrooming high-tech industries.
In the past years, great changes have taken place and its rapid development can be witnessed in the following data. Since 1999, Tianhe District has come first in terms of GDP, revenue and industrial production rate of the 10 districts of Guangzhou. In 2000, Tianhe's GDP reached over 8.918 billion yuan, 32 times as much as that of 1985.
Tianhe government attaches great importance to its environmental construction by planting more trees and building more than 10 green spots, such as Tianhe Park and Yangtao Park.
Urban afforested area has reached 50% of the land so far. Tianhe initiates "Environment is image, and efficiency is productive force". The whole district has become a window of a modern metropolis of Guangzhou with a great number of modern cultural facilities, universities and research institutes, high-rises and modern IT companies: Tianhe Sports Center where the 6th National Sports Games was held in 1987, Guangzhou East Train Station, Dongzhan Square, 80-story-high Zhongxin Tower, Guangzhou Book Shopping Center, Huanan Expressway and two Inner Ring Expressways. Guangdong Olympic Sports Center for the 9th National Sports Games and the environment-friendly New Pearl River City will display a rosy picture of Tianhe's promising future in the 21st century.
With a dozen universities, colleges and research institutes located in Tianhe District, such as South China Normal University, South China University of Technology, Guangdong Polytechnic Normal University and Jinan University, the local high-tech industries have been booming for the past decade.
Three high-tech parks at state level have been set up with more than 1 000 enterprises functioning in those parks. They are Tianhe Science & Technology Zone, Software Park and South China University of Technology Software Park, leading Guangdong ahead in software industry in China.
Tianhe Sports Center is located in the east of Guangzhou, covering an area of 540,000 sq meters. Built in 1987 when the 6th National Sports Games was held here, Tianhe Sports Center has become a landmark of thriving Tianhe District.
Around it, a lot of modern high-rises have been built, such as Zhongxin Tower, Mayors' Mansion, Jusco, Guangzhou East Train Station, Dongzhan Square, Guangzhou Book Shopping Center, Teem Plaza and Times Plaza. Large festival activities are often held here, such as International Food Exhibition, Spring Flower Fair and Guangzhou Tourist Promotion & Carnival. There are a lot of promotion shows around almost every weekend.
With so many advantages, so good a geographic location and favorable policies for economic development, Tianhe has attracted more overseas investment than any other prefectural districts in Guangdong Province, having become a huge multi-channeled and diversified international trade market.
