Sanshui City was already a county even in the Ming Dynasty, but it wasn't recognized as a city until 1993. There was a time (1959-1960) when Sanshui was only part of Nanhai County.
With a population of 363 582 and covering 873.31 sq km, Sanshui lies at the northwestern tip of the Pearl River Delta and abounds in agricultural products: rice, sugarcane, jute and fruit. Its industry is composed of building materials, machinery, chemical fertilizer, and food processing. Sanshui is linked to other cities via its waterways, highways and Guangzhou-Sanshui Railway.
