Covering an area of 806 sq meters and with a population of 1.05 million, Shunde City is situated in the middle of the fertile Pearl River Delta, between Guangzhou and Hong Kong. It was set up as a county in the 3rd year (1452 AD) of Jintai reign of the Ming dynasty (1368-1644), and conferred with the administrative status of a city in 1992 by the State Council.

Situated on the fertile river plain with waterways crisscrossed all over, Shunde is a land of plenty, well known for fish farming, fruit production and flower cultivation. The city is surrounded with green sugarcanes, mulberry bushes, banana trees and fishponds.

With a flat terrain, Shunde is endowed with a dense network of waterways, renowned for its fish farming ponds, rice paddies with silkworm mulberry trees planting around, forming an effective system of agriculture. It is also an unforgettable feature of the Pearl River Delta.

Chencun, a suburban village is popular with its flower planting and has become a productive base of fresh flowers, sold to Guangzhou, Hong Kong, Macao and even Southeast Asian countries. It has become a flora valley in Guangdong province. The 5th China Flower Exposition & the 3rd China Flower Trade Fair (Floriexpo) was held in the Flora World in Shunde during the National Day period in 2001. With Guangzhou, Foshan, Hong Kong and Macao nearby, it is very convenient to travel to those cities around Shunde. Shunde is also a hometown of 400 000 overseas Chinese.

The provincial government has selected Shunde a modern city prototype. Shunde first became widely known through its eponymous brand of household electric appliances, which have greatly boosted the city's economic takeoff. It was in early 1990s that this small city has already won the title of one of the four richest counties in China. Having completed its primary economic accumulation, what are the Shunde people doing today? Shunde has now entered a new age of overall integration with the world economy.

Today, the city has formulated an economic structure in conformity with the global economy. Of its capital composition, foreign capital accounts for one-third, and so far US $3 billion of foreign capital has been utilized. Within its market structure, the domestic and foreign markets complement one another, and more than one-third of the city's products are exported to European and American markets. As regards its industrial structure, 42% of the city's industrial output value is created by the foreign-funded enterprises. The city has also internationalized its human resources, with many local enterprises hiring managerial personnel from abroad.

Since the open policy was carried out, Shunde has been turned into a brand new modern city with an established modern industrial system, including electric appliances, gas stoves and showers, furniture, machinery, electronics, telecommunication, garment industry and animal feeder production.

With new and high-tech technology used widely, there have appeared a lot of well-organized enterprises with advanced management and prestigious brands, such as Rongsheng, Kelon, Midea, Huabao, Wanjiale, Galanz and Wanhe. Shunde has become the largest productive base of electric appliances in China. Flower cultivation and fish farming are also well developed on a large scale with a well-organized service system and wholesale commercial connections, and thus the local agricultural businesses are booming. Shunde has become a major productive base of river fish and flowers of all sorts.

With the municipal government sitting in Daliang Township, townships attract more public attention with thriving rural enterprises. An industrial system has been well established with a wide range of trades. But the focus is on household electric appliances. Shunde always associates with household appliances, refrigerators, microwave ovens and electric funs, for its township industries are amazingly booming, forming a large proportion of the economic pie of this province, even of China concerning with the industry of electric appliances. Shunde City has been leading the trend in this regard. For example, the largest bicycle production base in the world is located in Leliu Township, run by a Taiwan businessman.

With a population of 170 000, Ronggui Township in Shunde has become an economic star in China with a dozen of economic giants. Its GDP reached 78.7 billion yuan in 2001, about 75 000 yuan per capital. Shunde has been asked to realize the four modernizations ahead of the province to set up a very example for the whole nation. Galanz, the largest producer of microwave ovens in the world, also lies in Ronggui Township. Its microwave ovens had taken over 35% of the international market so far as in the year 2000. As the largest producer of electric fans in China, Midea produces 1.2 million air conditioners and 1.91 million fans annually. Wanjiale is the largest producer of electric & gas showers in China. Kangbao is the largest producer of electric cupboards in the world. Kelon is well known for its air conditioners. Rongsheng is the largest producer of refrigerators in China. It is estimated that Galanz's invisible value has reached 10.1 billion yuan, becoming the most valuable brand in China, whose overseas sale also ranks 2nd in the trade of home appliances in China. Midea's business volume reached 10.502 billion yuan, ranking 2nd in China in home appliance production, only second to Haier. It is hoped that, apart from microwave ovens, Shunde will lead the world in production of home appliances, air conditioners and refrigerators.

Shunde City is an important industrial productive base and trading center in Guangdong Province. It will attract more attention of the nation as well as the world in near future. Shunde has gathered a lot of talents in recent years. As a local saying goes: "No talents, No industries." So far, Shunde's successful applications for patent rights have occupied 1% of the nation's total, or 10% of Guangdong Province's total. Bruce Lee, as a famous international film star, was originally from Shunde. Lee's father was born in Jun'an Township. Lee's style of Chinese kungfu has left a deep impression to the international moviegoers. A museum in memory of Bruce Lee was built up in Shunde, Bruce's hometown.

Shunde people enjoy the wealth brought by the present economic reform. For example, they have 12 private cars out of 100 households, or a private car for every 8 families (in 2001). They eat out more and travel more. They have the best chefs of Cantonese dishes. Shunde is popular for its eateries as well. Apart from its booming industries, Shunde's tourism has been developing rapidly with a lot of famous scenic spots, including Qinghui Garden, Flora World, Baolin Temple, Xishan Temple, Jun'an Eco-Park and Junnan International Golf Club. Among them Qinghui Garden, one of the four most famous gardens of the Qing Dynasty, is the best.

Jun'an Eco-Park covers a land area of 200 hectares surrounded with green hills and waters. This garden focuses on green agriculture, consisting of the traditional features of Lingnan water country, rice paddies and fishponds with mulberry trees around.

Qinghui Garden was built in the Ming Dynasty, a traditional complex made mainly of wood and brick. There are pavilions, kiosks, corridors, porches and mansions with some zigzag paths and lotus ponds in between, located in the different corners of the garden, but well designed with a strong Lingnan charisma. It is located in Daliang Township in Shunde. There are a lot of well-cultivated flower plants and rare trees growing in the garden.

Baolin Temple was built in 917 AD, restored and removed to Mt.Taipingshan in Daliang. It is one of the earliest temples in Shunde. It is said there existed Baolin Temple before Shunde was set up.
