Dongguan has become an outstanding city, a rising star in South China's economic development in recent years. With a population of over 7 million, Dongguan is a city of migrants, for there are over 5 million migrant workers and businessmen out of its total population. They are from the different parts of the country to seek for a fortune or a better life.
What a robust city with so many strangers and new comers! Dongguan is also one of the two cities at prefectural level without any attached county or city at county level, but it is the third largest city in Guangdong, only second to Guangzhou and Shenzhen.
It is said that the local private economy takes about 80% of Dongguan's total at present, the highest private proportion in China. Private firms have provided more job opportunities and contributed highly to the state and local tax revenue. They are attractive to overseas businessmen and hire thousands of migrant workers each year. It is estimated that this increasing labor mobility has contributed to between 16-20% of the local economic growth during the past 20 years in Guangdong. But it is hard to maintain the social order and organize those transient job seekers.
Shenzhen and Dongguan's successful stories, anyway, offer us some spiritual food that government should adopt a more liberal policy towards transient laborers, especially young talents and skillful workers, and make cities more accessible to them.
Furthermore, the local private businesses, which have played a big role in the economic development and employed so large a body of workers in Dongguan, need more legal and financial support, as well as to improve their management and upgrade their technological levels, in order to achieve better development.
Guangdong's private economy has seen a steady development since 1980s. It has contributed a great deal in pushing forward the whole economic situation in South China. A highly mobile society will create a splendid population with creative inspiration and daring business spirit. This is what China needs urgently. Shenzhen and Dongguan have set up a very good example in this regard in China, even in the world.
With Guangzhou-Shenzhen Expressway passing through, this urban corridor, from Guangzhou to Dongguan, then to Shenzhen and Hong Kong, is the most densely populated area in Guangdong Province. With a huge population of over 30 million and with the most concentrated industries in this area as well, this corridor has caught the imagination of the world. Businessmen are in favor of this place, for everything is available, from land to spare part, from talent to know-how, or from business partner to buyer.
You can get whatever you want when you are doing business here. So when China's 3D EXPO was held in Dongguan a few years ago, it became a great success immediately. In 2000 Dongguan 3C EXPO was promoted as one of the four most famous international electronic fairs in the world after COMDEX Fall in Las Vegas of America, CEBIT in Hanover of Germany, and COMPUTEX in Taipei of China.
