Colin Lucas was born on 25 August 1940 at Cairo, Egypt. He did his undergraduate and postgraduate work at Lincoln College, Oxford. He was a Lecturer at Sheffield University (1965-70) and Manchester University (1970-73). He was Fellow and Tutor in Modern History at Balliol College, Oxford (1973-90) and Professor of History and then Dean of the Division of the Social Sciences at the University of Chicago (1990-94). He became Master of Balliol College in 1994 and is currently Vice-Chancellor of the University of Oxford. He has also been a Visiting Professor at the University of Lyon-II, Indiana University and Cornell University.
He is a specialist in the history of eighteenth-century France, principally the French Revolution. His research interests have been in the Terror, revolutionary and popular violence, the causes of revolution and practices of democratic politics in situations of stress. Among his publications are The Structure of the Terror (Oxford, 1973), (with Gwynne Lewis) Beyond the Terror (Cambridge, 1983), ed. The Political Culture of the French Revolution (Oxford, Pergamon, 1988), ed. Rewriting the French Revolution (Oxford, 1991) as well as numberous essays and articles.
He holds an honorary doctorate from the University of Lyon-II in France and is an Honorary Fellow of Lincoln College, Oxford.
