The release event of the Guangzhou International Award series reports on global urban innovation and Local Implementation of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Seminar was held in Guangzhou on August 24 in an online and offline format.

The reports released at the event include a series reports on Global Urban Innovation including Urban Innovation Trends: A Global Report, the 5th Guangzhou Award Report on Local Implementation of SDGs, and the Urban Innovation Assessment Methodology Interim Report.

Gao Yuyue, Deputy Secretary General of the Guangzhou Government, said, “we hope we could prove that global cities and local governments have the courage and ability to push forward sustainable development together. Guangzhou will continue to enhance the global influence of the Guangzhou Award, promote global city exchanges and cooperation as well as gather global wisdom on sustainable development, so that we could accelerate the realization of the United Nation’s SDGs and create a better world.”

The Urban Innovation Trends: A Global Report reviews more than 1000 urban innovation cases submitted by cities, since 2012, of different countries to participate in the Guangzhou Award. The report indicates that the participatory mechanism and the participation of residents are fundamental, and it anticipates that urban innovation will be further directed by data management and artificial intelligence. However, the problem of data divide will be increasingly prominent in urban innovation. It suggests that cities should put forward policies to promote equality and support vulnerable groups as the global pandemic has been boosting unemployment rates.

The Urban Innovation Assessment Methodology Interim Report redefines urban `innovation and puts forward an urban innovation assessment methodology, aiming to help people gain insight into urban innovation ecosystems.

The 5th Guangzhou Award Report on Local Implementation of SDGs was launched at the UN High Level Political Forum in July and now the Chinese version has been released. The report indicates that the effect of COVID-19 pandemic will last for decades, society, people’s mindset and behavior need to be reshaped to meet future expectations. However, global environmental changes will bring more profound challenges to sustainable development.

Emilia Saiz, Secretary General of United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG), and Octavi de la Varga, Secretary General of Metropolis announced on the launching event and expressed great thanks to the contributions made by the Guangzhou Award and the Guangzhou Government. Experts and media representatives from home and abroad also participated in the event.
