Chess tournament tightens Guangzhou-Lyon sister relationship

A junior chess competition was held between Guangzhou and its sister city, Lyon, on June 11 by Guangzhou Foreign Affairs Office, Guangzhou Administration of Sport and Guangzhou Sports Association.

The competition included 3 rounds which were conducted online. On the evening of June 11, 12 players of Team Guangzhou gathered at Guangzhou Chess Club and competed with Team Lyon for the first round through the internet.

Chen Jie, vice mayor of Guangzhou, said that Guangzhou deepened communication and exchanges with Lyon in such fields as trade, science and technology, sports, tourism, people-to-people exchanges since 1988 when the two cities forged sister relationship. The tournament gave a chance for young people of two cities and sowed the seeds of friendship.

Lu Qingjiang, Consul-General of Consulate-General of the People’s Republic of China in Lyon, addressed the opening ceremony stating that the tournament indicated the bond between Guangzhou and Lyon amid the pandemic. “The competition can help young people of Guangzhou and Lyon understand each other and eventually, contribute to the ties between China and France.”
