Today (October 4) marks China's Chongyang or Double Ninth Festival,  a day as an opportunity to care for and appreciate the elderly. Here are some leisure and cultural spots in Guangzhou for the elderly.

1. The University for the Elderly

On March 7, 2022, Guangzhou University for the Elderly officially opened, offering a total of 167 disciplines. The most popular disciplines are dance, musical instrument, vocal music, painting and calligraphy, literature, traditional Chinese medicine, and computing.

2. Baiyun Mountains & Cloud Road

As a typical lower-altitude mountain, Baiyun Mountain is equipped with complete security facilities, including greenways, public toilets, shuttle buses, and emergency calls every few hundred meters, which are very elderly-friendly.

Every day at the top of Baiyun Mountain, there are choirs formed by the elderly, as well as professional conductors and bands. Both the elderly and the young can join and sing together. Visitors can also take the cable car or battery car down the mountain.

Additionally, there is also a beautiful "cloud road (云道)" in Guangzhou that connects the eight major parks in downtown. Visitors can enter from multiple entrances and walk through the Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall, Sculpture Park, Luhu Park, Baiyun Mountain and other scenic spots. The most recommended entrance is the northeast gate of Yuexiu Park. From here, you can avoid long stairs and use flat roads and small slopes to enter the park.

5. Public Transportation

In addition, Guangzhou has also issued a series of preferential policies in improving the life quality of the elderly. For example, seniors over 60 years old but under 65 years old can take half-price buses or metros, while those over 65 years old are free of fares. In terms of medical care, there are currently 1,215 community hospitals in Guangzhou that provide free health assessments and free consultation on health issues for the elderly over 65 years old.
