Guangdong's documentary series Canton Today officially premiered on the National Broadcasting Corporation of Papua New Guinea (NBC) on July 30, alongside the launch of the "Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area: APEC Documentary Screening Event".

During the event, Guangdong Radio and Television (GRT) and NBC signed a memorandum of understanding to deepen cooperation in content sharing, co-productions, personnel exchanges and international outreach.

The event comes as China hosts APEC meetings this year and marks the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between China and Papua New Guinea.
Deng Hong, Deputy Director of the Information Office of the People's Government of Guangdong Province, said the documentary screenings and the launch of Canton Today in Papua New Guinea would help local audiences gain a broader understanding of China. He also welcomed NBC to Guangdong to cover the upcoming APEC meetings.

Michael Samuga, Deputy Managing Director of NBC, expressed hope that cooperation would continue to expand in content, technology and professional exchanges. He also announced that NBC would broadcast four documentaries about the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area to further promote cultural exchange.

As part of the screening event, the Guangdong-produced documentary series Inspiring Greater Bay Area, Touching the Greater Bay Area China, Chinese White Dolphin and Where Are You Going, as well as the films Blossoms of Luck and Honey Money Phony, would be aired in Papua New Guinea.

The productions highlight the region's urban development, rich biodiversity and Lingnan culture, offering audiences in Papua New Guinea a fresh perspective on one of China's most dynamic economic hubs.
Following the signing ceremony, the Guangdong delegation toured NBC's newsroom, television studios and broadcast operations center. The two sides also exchanged views on digital transformation in broadcasting, media integration and television production.

Papua New Guinea was among the first Pacific island countries to establish diplomatic relations with China. It was also the first country in the region to sign both a memorandum of understanding and a cooperation plan with China on Belt and Road cooperation.
NBC is the country's largest and oldest state-owned broadcaster, reaching nearly 10 million people across all 22 provincial-level divisions.
