Police in Zhuhai, south China's Guangdong province, have launched a series of campaigns to crack down on the infringement of intellectual property rights (IPRs). The crackdown on the sale and manufacture of counterfeit and shoddy goods in such sectors as food and medicine has been the focus of Zhuhai police.

In January 2022, before the Chinese New Year, Zhuhai police seized a batch of counterfeit wine valued at more than a million RMB. In June of the same year, the police busted nine suspects for manufacturing and selling counterfeit medicine and seized a number of fake weight-loss drugs, which involved a total amount of more than five million RMB.

In addition, Zhuhai police cracked a case of trademark and product counterfeiting in August 2022, arresting 43 suspects for manufacturing and selling counterfeit mobile phone accessories. A total of more than 80 million RMB was involved in the case.

Zhuhai police handle IPR infringement cases with higher efficiency

Zhuhai is now making every effort to improve the efficiency of the investigation and crackdown on the cases related to the infringement of IPRs, the sale and manufacture of counterfeit products, and reputational damage to enterprises and brands, in a bid to ensure fair competition in the market.

In April 2022, Zhuhai police busted a trademark counterfeiting syndicate within 10 days, dismantling an illegal production line, arresting four suspects, and seizing over 70 thousand fake trademarks.

One month later, the police cracked a case of selling and manufacturing counterfeit products within one month, where 43 suspects were arrested. In addition, three illegal cable production lines were disassembled while 100 tonnes of inferior cable were seized, involving more than 50 million RMB.

Zhuhai police are now making efforts to enhance residents' awareness of IP rights protection. The related laws in China include the Trademark Law, the Copyright Law, and the Patent Law. Residents are urged to become familiar with the laws and contact the police right away when they see something that is against the law.
