Guangdong police destroys drugs publicly at Humen Town

In order to commemorate the 179th anniversary of Destruction of opium at Humen, Guangdong Provincial Public Security Department and other related departments held an event called “Health Life without Drugs” at Humen Town, Dongguan on June 3rd.

At site of the Destruction of Opium at Humen, over 1,200 volunteers, youths and students learned drug harms through exhibitions and interactive games.

Moreover, a batch of drugs was destroyed publicly.

“Guangdong always pay high attention in prohibition of drugs and vows to create a drug-free environment for citizens,” said Lin Weixiong, Director General of Guangdong Provincial Public Security Department.

According to Guangdong Provincial Public Security Department, more than 2,700 drug-related cases have been solved from January to March, while 4.1 tons of drugs have been seized.


What is Destruction of Opium at Humen?

The Destruction of Opium at Humen began on 3 June 1839 and involved the destruction of 1,000 long tons (1,016 t) of illegal opium seized from British traders under the aegis of Lin Zexu, an Imperial Commissioner of Qing Dynasty. Conducted on the banks of the Pearl River outside Humen Town, Dongguan City, Guangdong Province. The work commenced on June 3rd, 1839 and took a total of 23 days.
