On July 27, an unmanned pitch paver and several driverless road rollers were put into use at the expansion project site of Maoming-Zhanjiang Expressway.

This was the first time that unmanned vehicles wereused for expressway construction in the province. They can greatly improve construction quality and efficiency despite the scorching heat during summer.

These rollers and pavers can follow the planned operation path based on the data collected by the BeiDou Navigation Satellite System.

In addition, they also have features including automatic early warning, emergency stop, and autonomous obstacle avoidance.
With a total length of 108.59 km and a design speed of 120 km/h, the current reconstruction project will expand Maoming-Zhanjiang Expressway into two-way eight lanes. The Guanzhu-Linwu section is expected to open to traffic this year and the Linwu-Gaoyang section will start operation in 2023.
Upon completion, the expressway will inject strong impetus into the socio-economic development along the route, enhance the connectivity between Western Guangdong and the Pearl River Delta region, and give play to the leading role of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.
