From today to March 26th, citizens can admire the Japanese cherry blossoms at Nansha's Sunflower Garden. For the first time, large quantities of Japanese cherry trees had been fostered and exhibited in Guangdong Province. The Japanese cherry trees blossom one month earlier than the common cherry trees do and their flowering period can be extended to one month.
The cherry trees occupy an area of 100 Mu (Chinese unit of area, 1/15 of a hectare). An executive of the Sunflower Garden said "This is a special event for the celebration of Women's Day, March 8. 6,000 cherry trees will be shown to visitors.".
The flowering period of the cherry trees is short. In Japan, the flowering period is only four to ten days. Thanks to the special technologies adopted, the cherry trees in the Garden can flower for more than a month. Most of the cherry trees in the Garden were fostered by grafting Japanese cherry branches onto Chinese cherry trees.
