According to the Guangzhou Construction Committee and Guangzhou Traffic Improvement Office, the bus rapid transit (BRT) system will be piloted on Zhongshan Road (from Tianhe intersection to Xiayuan Section) this year. The traffic speed from Teemall to Gangding is expected to be boosted to three times as fast and half an hour will be saved for citizens taking buses to and from the downtown area.
The BRT system will be adopted throughout the city before the 2010 Asian Games, said Mayor Zhang Guangning.
After two years' study and analysis, the first BRT system has just been revealed. New high-capacity buses will be assigned to 23 routes, running in BRT lanes in the middle of roads. The routes and stations will not change. At four bus stations—Sport Center, Shibei, Gangding and Chepo stations—passengers can directly enter metro stations.
The Zhongshan Road project now is open for comments from citizens. By 2010, the BRT system will be further improved; together with the metro system, it will become the major means of public transport. To improve the road capacity, the Guangzhou Construction Committee, the Guangzhou Traffic Improvement Office, and the police will carry out single-direction traffic management, adopt dynamic traffic management and strengthen management over construction sites, said Chen Rugui, Director of the Guangzhou Construction Committee.
Citizens' suggestions and comments on the BRT system and the improvement of traffic management are welcome, said Mr. Chen.
