Before Filipinos' yearly Christmas travel from the Metropolis to provinces of the archipelago, the Philippine Coast Guard Wednesday said they have been on a nationwide red alert to ensure public security.
Coast Guard Commandant Damian Carlos said in an interview of the dzBB radio that he has instructed personnel in all ports of the country to be strict in inspecting vessels to ensure the safety of the passengers.
"Our personnel are to inspect all passengers and vessels to make sure there is no overloading," Carlos said.
He said the red alert is in line with the government's efforts to ensure sea travel safety during the Christmas season.
Carlos said the Coast Guard will work together with the Philippine National Police and the Philippine Navy to ensure maritime safety during the holidays.
Students and employees in many schools and offices here are expected to head for their homes or resorts in the provinces as they start their Christmas vacation this week.
