A new expressway section linking Guangzhou and Zhuhai in Guangdong was put into operation Tuesday.
The new expressway could cut travel time between the two cities by 30 minutes.
Zhong Yangsheng, executive vice governor of Guangdong Province, presided over inauguration of the north section of the Guangzhou-Zhuhai Expressway, part of the Beijing-Zhuhai Expressway.
On the same occasion, Zhong declared the start of the construction of an expressway section linking Shunde and Zhongshan, which is part of a route between Taiyuan, Shanxi Province, and Macao.
The north section of the Guangzhou-Zhuhai Expressway is 27 kilometers long and cost 270 million yuan (US$33 million). Its construction began in November 2002.
According to Gan Xin, vice mayor of Guangzhou, its operation will help enhance development of the southern part of Guangzhou.
The expressway section linking Shunde and Zhongshan is 45.573 kilometers long and will cost 530 million yuan. The section's first-phase construction was completed in April 2004, shortening driving time between Guangzhou and Shunde to only eight minutes. It will be completed by the end of 2007.
