A new expressway linking Shenzhen and Guangzhou will begin construction in 2006, the Shenzhen Economic Daily reported.
Upon completion in 2008, the 13.4-billion-yuan (US$1.08 billion) expressway would be the second one linking the two major cities in Guangdong, the report said, citing a five-year infrastructure construction plan put out by the provincial government.
The planned expressway will begin from Huangpu District in Guangzhou, running across Dongjiang River, bypassing Dongguan and finally ending in Shenzhen's Shekou. It is expected to cut the driving time from Guangzhou to Hong Kong to one-and-a-half hours, down from the present two-and-a-half hours.
The present Guangzhou-Shenzhen Expressway sees about 90,000 vehicles a day on average and frequent traffic jams during peak hours.
Also planned by the Guangdong government is the Pearl River Delta intercity light rail network costing 49.59 billion yuan.
Upon completion in 2009, the network will greatly shorten the travel time among Pearl River Delta cities.
