Ship tickets between Haikou and Guangzhou are cheaper starting from January 1st, 2005.
The ordinary ticket price will be reduced by 50 yuan. But the ticket price will go up again during the Spring Festival.
Haikou Port Passenger Station said the price cut was to meet competition after the launching of the Yuehai railway passenger service.
The journey between Guangzhou and Haikou is 12 hours by train, but 19 hours by ship. The seven-hour difference in traveling time may have accounted for the reduced number of ferry passengers.
Experts predict that competition for passengers will be more keen during the Spring Festival and this will again affect the ticket price.
