GUANGZHOU's new Baiyun International Airport will be finished in October after three-year's construction, the Yangcheng Evening News reported Monday.
The new airport will begin formal operation in June next year, the report said.
The main infrastructure has been finished with the interior decoration now under way.
The landmark project, costing 19.6 billion yuan (US$2.3 billion), is said to be the most advanced and largest airport in the nation, the report said.
It was also the first airport in the country to introduce the Metro into its passenger terminal building, it said.
With an area of 15 square kilometers, the new airport's size would be five times the size of the old one.
By 2010, the airport could see a passenger flow of 25 million and a cargo flow of 1 million tons a year. By 2030, it could see a passenger flow of 80 million and a cargo flow of 2.5 million tons a year.
The present passenger flow is 16 million and the cargo flow 590,000 tons.
The city also aims to build a world-standard port, which could see a cargo flow of 170 million tons in the future
