Large menu of delights set for Doumen golden week

The seven-day Doumen Tourism & Gourmet Cultural Festival will open at Gymnasium Square at 10am on September 29, it was announced at a press conference Wednesday.

The festival is meant to draw visitors to taste Baijiao sea bass, the first Nationally Protected Geographic Indication product in Zhuhai, and other local specialty food. Available will be ten top Baijiao sea bass dishes cooked by chefs from various star-hotels, ten top handmade Doumen specialty snacks and nearly 100 Chinese dishes. Tsingtao beer will be provided along a street to go with the traditional snacks.

Besides the sea bass, Doumen prawn, Wushan mud crab, North Hezhou small papaya, Baiteng Lake celery, Hezhou lotus root, Yuan Longping super hybrid rice and other aquatic and farm products will be served.

The festival is sponsored by the district government, the city Ocean, Agriculture, Fisheries & Water Bureau, and the Culture, Sports & Tourism Bureau. Their organising committee will co-host a TV show sponsored by Guangdong Southern Television Station on the opening evening. Well-known TVS2 hosts and hostesses and actors and actresses of some household-name Guangdong TV series will stage performances with local entertainers. Residents can take part in the show, the Cantonese folk song get-together, Doumen's original folk music concert, Tsingtao Beer joint performance and other events.

Not only this, festival-goers can bicycle around Doumen along the 47km greenway joining hills, rivers, lakes and the sea. Meanwhile, motor tours to, for example, Denglongsha tourist area, Jintai Temple on Huangyang Mt, No4 Greenway and the vast Lianjiang farmland; and Jintai Temple, Paishan old village, Doumen old street, Luyi Ancestral Hall and Wanshan old village are suggested.

In addition, visitors can golf at the Pine Valley Club, go carting at Doumen Hengfeng Amusement Park across from Ocean Spring Resort, bicycle on the No4 Greenway and tour the Tsingtao Beer industrial tourist spot.

Moreover, a signing ceremony for seven major projects and a number of small projects with investment totalling 1.5 billion yuan ($237 million) will take place. The projects include a partnership for building an aquaculture

science, education and scientific research base between the Doumen Eco-Agricultural Park and Ocean University of China, sea bass sales marketing agreement between Baijiao Town Fishing Association and 11 sales companies in Qingdao of Shandong province, and sea bass and cooked shrimp processing and marketing agreement between Zhuhai Marine Aquaculture co ltd and Guangzhou Yinshan Fisheries co ltd.

In addition, renowned scholars including Dong Xianglin, vice president of Ocean University of China (OUC); Wen Haishen, professor of the College of Fisheries of OUC; Lin Haoran, professor with Sun Yat-sen University; and He Jianguo, dean of the College of Fisheries of Sun Yat-sen University, will deliver speeches concerning sea bass seedling, breeding, processing, circulation, market forecast and other aspects.

The Baijiao Sea Bass Championship will screen out the king fish for auction on the afternoon of September 29, and the reward will be donated to needy students in Doumen.

At the same time, a Baijiao Sea Bass Cup prose and travel notes and photography contest to depict featured food, landscape, natives, and culture of Doumen District with prizes of 3,000 yuan ($472) and 2,000 yuan ($315) each will take place soon.
