Xiaozhou Village was built at the end of Yuan Dynasty, more than 370 years ago, and now stands on the southern outskirts of the city. It is a place characterized by classical Cantonese community landscapes and modern art, and has borne witness to all that the city has been through.

The landscapes include canals, well-kept buildings, bridges and local country roads. Branches of the Pearl River wander through the village with houses lining the banks. Among them are several clan temples, where the locals honor their ancestors. Cafe houses and shops can be easily found around Xiaozhou. The shops sell all kinds of beautiful and innovative arts and crafts.

Many artists choose to settle in Xiaozhou because of its ecological advantage and its low rent payment. In 2009, Xiaozhou Art Zone was founded near Xiaozhou Village and more and more artists have headed to this place and started their own studios. There are exhibitions all year round.

The blending of artistic creativity with the local customs and countryside architecture has sparked an interesting community in this historic enclave, creating a wonderfully romantic place to idle away a day.
